  • PowerProtect Cloud Snapshot Manager overview

Cloud Snapshot Manager is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution for backup and disaster recovery of cloud workloads, enabling organizations to manage and protect application data in AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) cloud environments seamlessly without requiring installation or infrastructure.

  • Resource types

The following are the resource types that Cloud Snapshot Manager supports for AWS, Azure, and GCP:

  • Supported features for resources

Learn about Cloud Snapshot Manager supported features for cloud resources across cloud providers.

  • Cloud Snapshot Manager quick start

The information that is provided here is intended to give you the needed information to quickly and easily setup Cloud Snapshot Manager. Follow the steps to successfully configure Cloud Snapshot Manager to manage your cloud based snapshots.

  • Access to Cloud Snapshot Manager

Existing Cloud Snapshot Manager users can choose to access the portal by configuring Federated Identity. Federated Identity is supported by SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) protocol.

  • Convert a trial account to a licensed account

To convert an existing trial account to a licensed account, complete the following steps.

  • Cloud account management

Cloud Snapshot Manager can protect the cloud resources (VM, Storage, Database) that are in AWS or Azure or GCP accounts.

  • Activate Cloud Snapshot Manager account

Cloud Snapshot Manager is in all Dell Technologies Data protection software bundles and can get activated with PowerProtect Data Manager license file.

  • Home dashboard

Cloud Snapshot Manager dashboard provides information about the status of your resources. You can also view protection plans that have run as well as Cloud Snapshot Manager events which have occurred in the last 24 hours.

  • AWS account management

An AWS cloud account can be created based on one of the following authentication types:

  • Azure account management

You can create Microsoft Azure cloud accounts using custom roles and assign the following details to the Cloud Snapshot Manager cloud account:

  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) account management

You can create GCP Service Account using custom role having required permissions in the GCP project.

  • Create a cloud account

You can create one or many cloud accounts, one at a time. Every Cloud Snapshot Manager cloud account represents communication with a unique AWS or Azure or Google Cloud Platform account. You can only associate one CSM cloud account with a cloud provider account.

  • Configure cloud provider permissions

A cloud account connects Cloud Snapshot Manager to a single cloud provider account.

  • Configure Service Account for GCP

Cloud Snapshot Manager allows you to use Service Account to discover and protect resources within a GCP project.

  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) permission usage

The following tables contain information about why Cloud Snapshot Manager requires GCP permissions to discover and protect resources in your cloud environment:

  • Edit a cloud account

You can edit details for a cloud account and perform tasks such as changing the authentication type, changing the role ARN value, changing the regions, changing service account and service account private_key, and updating the authentication key.

    • Edit an AWS cloud account

To edit an AWS cloud account, browse to Cloud Accounts in the portal and click Edit corresponding to the AWS account.

    • Edit an Azure cloud account

To edit an Azure cloud account, browse to Cloud Accounts in the portal and click Edit corresponding to the Azure account.

      • Update Azure credential details

The following steps have been provided as an example to help you to update Azure credential details:

      • Update Azure client secret key

The following steps have been provided as an example to help you to update the client secret key for an Azure account:

  • Edit a GCP cloud account
  • Delete a cloud account

You can delete a cloud account in Cloud Snapshot Manager provided there are no associated protection plans, active snapshots, or report schedules.

  • Configure AWS custom encryption keys

Cloud Snapshot Manager supports creating copies of snapshots in remote regions or cross-regions. Snapshots, both unencrypted and encrypted, can be copied to a remote account. Depending on the original snapshot encryption state and encryption key set for the DR account's remote region, copied snapshots can be unencrypted or encrypted.

  • Configure CSM Proxy Network

Using Cloud Snapshot Manager, you can copy snapshots to PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE) if you have DDVE deployed in your AWS or Azure cloud environment.

  • Configure Azure snapshot storage settings

In the Azure Snapshot Storage Settings page, you can specify a suffix for the resource group name which is used to create snapshots in an alternate resource group other than that of the resource itself or you can specify a specific Resource Group to store the snapshots. The alternate resource group must be created in the Azure portal.

  • Storage management

Cloud Snapshot Manager enables you to use storage appliances to store snapshots for long-term retention and to save on snapshot storage cost.

  • Add PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE) storage appliance

DDVE is a software-only protection storage system: a virtual deduplication system that provides data protection for organization and service provider environments.

  • Add Storage Units

After adding a PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE) storage appliance, you can add configuration details for Storage Units in Cloud Snapshot Manager.

  • Policy enablement

You can define the frequency and expiration of snapshots by creating a Cloud Snapshot Manager policy.

  • Protection Plan enablement

A Cloud Snapshot Manager protection plan enables the selection of resources that you want to protect and the assignment of a specific protection policy for those resources. You can disable or edit a defined protection plan at any time.

  • Resource discovery

Browse through discovered cloud resources to select one or many of these resources to snapshot (using the Snapshot function).

  • Snapshot management

In the Snapshots page, you can manage snapshots that Cloud Snapshot Manager creates, with options:

  • Job run status

On the Jobs page of the Cloud Snapshot Manager portal, you can see the run status of Cloud Snapshot Manager jobs.

  • Event browsing

You can filter for and list specific, defined events according to the time that they occurred in the Cloud Snapshot Manager portal or by the type of event that occurred.

  • Operations auditing

Cloud Snapshot Manager creates audit logs of user-initiated actions.

  • Report management

On the Reports page of the Cloud Snapshot Manager portal, you can generate reports under the following categories:

  • Identity and access management

For tailoring Cloud Snapshot Manager users' capabilities to align with their responsibilities, Cloud Snapshot Manager provides Role Based Access Control (RBAC).

  • Entitlements

The Entitlements page in the Cloud Snapshot Manager portal gives you a summary of the entitlements that were purchased and assigned to a Cloud Snapshot Manager account.

  • Preferences

The Preferences page allows you to specify different user preferences for Cloud Snapshot Manager.

  • Cloud Snapshot Manager integration with PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (AWS)

Cloud Snapshot Manager integration with PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE) enables you to leverage the power of DDVE to retain AWS snapshot copies (backup copies) for a long period with high level of deduplication.

  • Cloud Snapshot Manager integration with PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (Azure)

Cloud Snapshot Manager integration with PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE) enables you to leverage the power of DDVE to retain Azure snapshot copies (backup copies) for a long period with high level of de-duplication.

  • Known product limitations

Learn about the known limitations of Cloud Snapshot Manager.
