Filed as two sets, each organized in chronological order, that overlap in some cases, but not completely. The first set includes printed copies of speech transcripts. The second set has printed copies of speech transcripts, some with handwritten annotations, different versions, or with press releases of a speech transcript. A memorandum found in the 1996 file of the second set describes them as copies that Mondale wanted to save. There are also drafts for two speeches given by Mondale in 1997 reflecting on the major themes of his ambassadorship.

Expand/CollapseSPECIAL ENVOY TO INDONESIA

On February 23, 1998 President Clinton appointed former vice-president Walter Mondale as his special envoy to Indonesia for talks with Indonesia's President Soeharto (Suharto) at a time when Indonesia was facing financial instability and a deteriorating economic and political situation. The talks took place on March 3, 1998 and centered around financial reforms needed in Indonesia before a significant loan from the International Monetary Fund would be granted. Shortly after Mondale's trip to Indonesia Soeharto was re-elected as President, but continued economic instability and political demonstrations led him to resign on May 21, 1998.

This series includes correspondence, research, newspaper and magazine articles, trip itinerary and schedule information, and talking points and media statements.
