HISTORICAL NOTE
The State Geographic Board was established by the legislature in 1937 (Laws 1937 c63) and consisted of the commissioner of conservation, the commissioner of state highways, and the director of the Minnesota Historical Society. Prior to the board's establishment, geographic names were changed by petitioning county boards (Laws 1925 c157). The county boards submitted all changes to the commissioner of drainage and waters to prevent duplication.
The functions of the board were to determine the correct and most appropriate names of the lakes, streams, places, and other geographic features in the state and the spelling thereof; to pass upon and give names to unnamed geographic features in the state; and to cooperate with county boards in changing geographic names to eliminate duplication of names as far as possible. The board also sponsored the Minnesota gazetteer project, which was designed to compile and publish a gazetteer of Minnesota place names and was carried out with WPA funds. It was never completed.
The board was abolished by the legislature in 1971 and its functions transferred to the commissioner of Natural Resources (Laws 1969 c1129 art3 s3), who assigned the work to the Division of Waters, Soils, and Minerals.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The board's administrative records include minutes of its sporadic formal meetings (1937-1969); correspondence and subject files relating to place name derivations, proposed name changes, and the board's general administrative functioning and activities; opinions of the Minnesota attorney general on the board's powers and authority; lists of decisions of the Minnesota and United States geographic boards; files of correspondence and memoranda on place names arranged by county; and index cards regarding geographic place names for villages, townships, post offices, lakes, streams, resorts, islands, peninsulas and other geographic locations. The subject files include extensive data on place names in the Chippewa and Superior national forests, and a list of Ojibwe names of northern Minnesota lakes.
The Minnesota gazetteer project, sponsored by the Geographic Board and carried out with WPA funds, was designed to compile and eventually publish a gazetteer of Minnesota place names. The project was never completed. Project files include correspondence, place name bibliographies, maps, and assorted lists of place names giving histories and derivations. They are supplemented by index cards for townships, villages and cities, ghost towns, and the counties of Aitkin, Crow Wing, and Itasca. The card for each place name gives its location by range, township, and section, occasional notes on alternate or previous names, and authority citations.
